In the 2023 South Korean film “Kill Boksoon,” an assassin with a perfect success rate faces a challenge she cannot dispatch so easily: connecting with her teenage daughter.
Written and directed by Byun Sung-hyun, the film follows Gil Bok-soon, played by Jeon Do-yeon, a contract killer employed by MK, an organization that presents itself publicly as an event company. Bok-soon is considered one of the best in her profession, but at home she is a single mother struggling to understand her daughter, Gil Jae-young, played by Kim Si-a.
A Final Assignment Changes the Rules
Hoping to break down the wall between herself and Jae-young, Bok-soon decides to leave MK. Before responding to a contract-renewal offer from the company’s chief, Cha Min-kyu, she takes one final assignment and discovers a hidden truth behind it.
Her response violates a central rule of MK’s deadly business: Any job authorized by the company must at least be attempted. The decision turns Bok-soon into a target for both the organization and other assassins.
Sol Kyung-gu plays Cha, while the supporting cast includes Esom as Cha Min-hee, Koo Kyo-hwan as Han Hee-sung, Kim Sung-oh as Manager Shin and Lee Yeon as Young-ji. Hwang Jung-min makes a special appearance as Oda Shinichiro.
A Global Netflix Breakout
“Kill Boksoon” had its world premiere at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival before reaching audiences through Netflix. It remained No. 1 on Netflix in South Korea for 30 consecutive days, the first Korean Netflix film to reach that mark. It also led the platform’s non-English film rankings for two weeks and rose to No. 2 globally.
From 2023 through 2025, it ranked second among Korean Netflix films in viewing time. That international reach gave audiences beyond Korea an entry point into a story that blends a stylized criminal underworld with a recognizable conflict between professional demands and family life.
Veteran Stars Reunite
The film marks the third collaboration between Jeon and Sol, following the 2001 film “I Wish I Had a Wife” and the 2019 drama “Birthday.” It is also Sol and Esom’s second film together after 2023’s “Phantom.”
At its core, “Kill Boksoon” draws its tension from Bok-soon’s sharply divided identities. She is nearly flawless when following the rules of her profession, yet uncertain when approaching her daughter. Her final mission forces those worlds together, making the conflict between work, loyalty and motherhood the center of the film.
