The Busan International Film Festival, widely known in South Korea by the abbreviation BIFF, has surged in online searches as reports focus on ticket sales, official selections, sold-out screenings, visiting guests and the festival’s jury.
Held each fall around the Busan Cinema Center in the southeastern port city of Busan, BIFF is considered one of Asia’s largest film festivals, alongside the Tokyo and Hong Kong festivals. It shifted to a competitive format for Asian films in 2025.
New International Status for 2026
For 2026, BIFF was officially placed on the “A-list” under a revamped accreditation system operated by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations, known as FIAPF.
The winner of the Busan Award Grand Prize, the festival’s top competition honor, will also become eligible for submission in the international feature film category at the Academy Awards in the United States.
Tickets and Programming
Recent coverage has highlighted the start of ticket sales, the need to prepare screening codes in advance and questions about whether certain screenings use unreserved seating. Festivalgoers should consult BIFF’s official ticketing notice for the relevant year before attempting to book.
BIFF’s program is organized into 11 sections. New Currents features first or second films by emerging Asian directors, while Flash Forward introduces work by newer filmmakers from outside Asia. Wide Angle covers shorts, animation, documentaries and experimental films.
Noncompetitive sections include Gala Presentation, A Window on Asian Cinema, Korean Cinema Today, Korean Cinema Retrospective and World Cinema. The lineup also includes Open Cinema outdoor screenings, the late-night Midnight Passion program and special presentations.
Invited competition titles are eligible for the Busan Awards, including the Grand Prize, best director, special jury prize, acting honors and an artistic contribution award. Screening titles, schedules and ticket availability are published through BIFF’s official program and booking announcements.
