‘Assassin(s)’ Leads for a Second Week

“Assassin(s)” remained No. 1 at the South Korean box office for the week of Sept. 28 through Oct. 4, according to the Korean Film Council, the government-backed agency commonly known as KOFIC.

The film, released Sept. 23, drew 667,774 moviegoers during the week, bringing its cumulative admissions to 2,233,961. It earned 6.39 billion won for a 23.5% share of weekly box-office revenue and played 25,868 times across 1,314 screens.

South Korea typically measures box-office performance by admissions as well as revenue, reflecting the country’s centralized movie-ticket reporting system.

‘Chiikawa’ Jumps to Second Place

“Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island” climbed 11 places to No. 2 with 574,035 weekly admissions and 604,760 admissions overall. Although it officially opened Sept. 30, advance screenings were included in the previous week’s data, so KOFIC did not classify it as a new entry. The film earned 5.98 billion won, accounting for 22% of weekly revenue.

“Tazza: Song of Beelzebub” slipped one position to No. 3. It attracted 532,643 viewers during the week and has sold 1,365,646 tickets since its Sept. 23 release. Its weekly revenue reached 5.3 billion won, or 19.5% of the market.

‘Odyssey’ Nears 12 Million Admissions

“Odyssey” fell one spot to No. 4 but continued its strong run. The film drew 214,952 viewers for the week, raising its cumulative total to 11,998,206 admissions since opening Aug. 5. It earned 2.91 billion won during the period, representing 10.7% of box-office revenue.

New release “Revival Man: The Red” entered at No. 5 with 183,303 weekly admissions and 189,802 overall. The film, which opened Sept. 30, earned 1.82 billion won and screened 12,439 times across 870 screens.

The Rest of the Top 10

“Possible Love” held steady at No. 6 with 114,547 weekly admissions and 230,482 overall. “Intern” dropped three places to No. 7, drawing 78,816 viewers for a cumulative total of 834,866.

“Obsession” also fell three positions, landing at No. 8 with 67,591 weekly admissions and 916,738 overall. “Avengers: Endgame Encore” dropped two spots to No. 9, adding 40,800 admissions for a total of 148,747.

“Digger,” released Oct. 3, debuted at No. 10 with 28,551 admissions and 320 million won in weekly revenue.

All rankings, admissions and revenue figures were compiled from KOFIC’s integrated movie-ticket system for the week of Sept. 28 through Oct. 4.
