‘Chiikawa’ Takes the Weekly Crown
“Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island” climbed one spot to lead South Korea’s box office for the week of Oct. 12-18, according to the Korean Film Council, or KOFIC.
The film drew 547,462 moviegoers during the week, bringing its cumulative audience to 1,828,907 since its Sept. 30 release. It earned 5.53 billion won for a 38% share of weekly box-office revenue and played 22,024 times across 1,181 screens.
“Assassin(s)” fell one place to No. 2 with 255,330 admissions. The film has sold 3,249,172 tickets since opening Sept. 23. Its weekly revenue reached 2.48 billion won, representing 17% of the market.
“Tazza: Song of Beelzebub” held at No. 3, attracting 166,468 viewers for a cumulative total of 1,911,190. “Odyssey” remained No. 4 with 88,519 weekly admissions and 12,267,664 overall, the largest cumulative audience among the week’s top 10 films.
New Releases Enter the Top 10
“Whalefall: The Man Swallowed by a Whale,” released Oct. 14, debuted at No. 5 with 56,363 admissions and 570 million won in weekly revenue. “Street Fighter,” which opened the same day, entered at No. 8 with 34,912 weekly admissions and 320 million won.
“Video Game Guardian” surged 13 places to No. 7 after drawing 39,274 viewers. Although it officially opened Oct. 14, KOFIC did not classify it as a new entry because advance screenings were included in the previous week’s figures.
The Rest of the Top 10
“Look Back” remained at No. 6 with 42,962 weekly admissions and 105,345 overall. “Questionnaire About the Mouth” slipped two places to No. 9 with 26,643 viewers, while “Revival Man: The Red” dropped five spots to No. 10 with 24,203.
The rankings are based on data from KOFIC’s nationwide cinema ticketing system for Oct. 12-18.
