Oscar buzz builds around “Possible Love”

South Korean actor Jeon Do-yeon is emerging as a possible contender for the Academy Award for best actress, a nomination that would make her the first Korean performer recognized in the category.

U.S. entertainment publications highlighted Jeon on the 25th for her performance in director Lee Chang-dong’s Netflix film “Possible Love,” which opened on the 23rd. Jeon plays Mi-ok, the wife of a laid-off worker.

The Hollywood Reporter said Jeon’s acclaimed career and performance could carry her to a historic nomination. The publication praised the complexity of her acting, describing Mi-ok as a character whose expressions and voice resist simple interpretation and whose lightest moments can also be the most painful.

A career spanning film, television and theater

Although Jeon has not maintained the same visibility in international productions as some Korean stars, she has built a prominent career over several decades. She began as an advertising model in her 20s before appearing in films including “The Contact,” “The Harmonium in My Memory,” “You Are My Sunshine,” “Secret Sunshine” and “The Housemaid.” Her more recent work includes the television drama “Crash Course in Romance” and a stage production of “The Cherry Orchard.”

Lee said nominations for performers in non-English-language films remain rare and difficult to secure. He expressed hope that recognition from the academy would affirm Jeon’s accomplishments while also serving as visible evidence of the institution’s efforts to change.

Strong reviews in the United States

“Possible Love” holds a 100% score on the U.S. review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. The site listed the film alongside “The Odyssey” and “Dune: Part Three” as projected best picture contenders, while also naming Jeon as a possible best actress nominee and “Possible Love” as a contender for best international feature film.

The Los Angeles Times praised the film’s performances, screenplay and direction, calling it one of the year’s best movies. The newspaper described Mi-ok as a restless woman caught between desire, comfort and anxiety, and argued that performances such as Jeon’s are precisely what year-end best-of lists should recognize.

Jeon’s potential candidacy comes as Korean performers receive growing attention in Hollywood, following actors including Lee Byung-hun and Youn Yuh-jung. Any nomination would further extend the visibility of Korean cinema among American audiences and within the U.S. awards industry.
