SEOUL — News about university leadership, a major fire in one of Seoul’s last shantytowns and an international cricket match drove Google searches in South Korea on Oct. 27, 2026, according to the platform’s real-time trends data.
Korea University tops the list
Korea University was the day’s top-ranked trending term after reports that its president would resign to run for South Korea’s presidency. The private university, located in Seoul’s Seongbuk district, is one of the country’s best-known institutions. Google estimated more than 200 searches for the term.
Second was Jeonju Love Gift Certificate, a city-run local currency program offering benefits that can include 10% cash back and a 30% year-end tax deduction. Jeonju said that beginning in November, online reloads would open at 3 p.m. on the first day of each month instead of 12:15 a.m. If the first falls on a weekend or holiday, reloads will begin the next business day. In-person reloads will be available from 9 a.m. the following day.
Entertainment and cricket draw attention
Comedian Jeong Jong-cheol ranked third with more than 5,000 searches after online content revisited his move from Ilsan, northwest of Seoul, to the affluent Gangnam area. Actor Lee Kye-in said he had moved into an apartment in Ilsan’s Siksa neighborhood at Jeong’s recommendation. Jeong was described as later selling his large Ilsan apartment at a loss and relocating to the Seocho and Bangbae area of southern Seoul.
“Pak vs SL,” referring to Pakistan’s cricket match against Sri Lanka, ranked fourth with more than 500 searches. Interest centered on live coverage and viewing information for the one-day international tri-series match in Lahore. Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field.
Fire, markets and sports round out trends
“Delisting” ranked fifth as investors followed Hyungji Global’s request for an injunction against its removal from the stock exchange and broader concerns involving listed Hyungji Group companies. Office-chair maker Duoback also submitted an improvement plan for a listing review. The Korea Exchange was expected to decide by Nov. 24 whether to delist the company or grant it more time to make changes.
The Korean term for “body” or “figure” placed sixth. Soccer player Park Seung-soo ranked seventh after scoring an equalizer three minutes after entering a Newcastle United under-21 match as a substitute. Criticism also resurfaced over a previous controversy involving his use of a military discharge cap.
Japan’s Nikkei stock average ranked eighth. Guryong Village ranked ninth with more than 10,000 searches after a large fire broke out in the low-income settlement in Seoul’s wealthy Gangnam district. Fire authorities issued a Level 2 response, and smoke was visible across nearby parts of Gangnam.
“Jun Hyun-moo Plan,” the title of a Korean television program, ranked 10th amid criticism over the appearance of a 74-year-old restaurant owner who had refused filming and said she did not want publicity.
The rankings and approximate search totals were drawn from Google Trends’ real-time data for South Korea on Oct. 27. Google describes the figures as estimates.
