Baseball rivalry tops South Korea’s Google trending searches

South Korea’s top Google trending searches on Oct. 4 reflected a mix of sports, entertainment and public issues, with professional baseball leading the list. The most searched rising topic was the matchup between the Lotte Giants and KT Wiz, who faced each other in Suwon.

KT entered the game after defeating Lotte 5-0 on Oct. 3, extending its winning streak to five games. Starting pitcher Ko Young-pyo threw a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits while striking out eight batters over 102 pitches. The result helped KT reduce its magic number for securing first place in the regular season to four. Lotte, already eliminated from postseason contention, stood eighth in the standings.

Celebrity updates draw attention from Korean internet users

The second-ranked trending search was Jang Min-wook, a neurologist who appeared on KBS 1TV’s morning program. Jang, who runs a neurology clinic, recently drew public attention after news that he remarried actress Kang Sung-yeon in May.

The couple appeared together in a broadcast program before their relationship developed. Kang later shared holiday updates on social media, including images of Jang playing drums.

International news and social issues also enter the rankings

The search term “United States” ranked third as Korean users followed reports involving tensions between the U.S. and Iran, including comments from President Donald Trump about a possible decision regarding Iran and warnings directed at foreign companies over investment in the United States.

Other trending topics included the fifth anniversary of actor Nam Moon-chul’s death, discussion surrounding a Chinese woman who reportedly gave birth at age 60, and concerns over regional gaps in childbirth services in South Korea. The term “childbirth” gained attention after reports highlighted areas with limited access to delivery facilities.

Politics, accidents and professional basketball add to the day’s searches

Political controversy also appeared in the rankings. Kim Sang-wook became a trending topic after appearing before police for the first time following allegations involving overseas prostitution and election law violations. Kim denied wrongdoing.

The keyword “Ulsanbawi,” a famous rock formation in South Korea’s Seoraksan area, was linked to reports of mountain accidents during the National Foundation Day holiday period.

Professional basketball also drew attention as the Wonju DB Promy defeated Goyang Sono 95-86 in its home opener. The game reportedly sold out within five minutes, highlighting strong fan interest.

The final ranked topic was critic Jin Jung-kwon, who became involved in a dispute over comments related to the film “Assassins.” The day’s Google Trends list showed how Korean online attention moved between sports competitions, celebrity updates, public debates and social concerns.
