Tailored support for children in need

Good Neighbors said it used memorial donations honoring the late Korean actor Kim Soo-mi to support four children from families facing financial and caregiving crises.

Through the Kim Soo-mi Scholarship Support Project, the child-rights nonprofit provided educational, living-expense and career assistance tailored to each child’s circumstances over the past year. The organization said the aid helped the children continue their studies in more stable environments.

One recipient, whose family faced medical bills and caregiving demands because of an illness, was able to prepare for the next stage of schooling. Another child, who hopes to become a competitive swimmer, received training fees and swimming equipment and later won a bronze medal at a regional competition.

“The scholarship gave me the courage and hope to overcome a difficult time and move forward,” one child wrote in a letter. The recipient added that they hoped to one day share that support with others.

Book royalties fund memorial donation

Kim’s family donated the money to Good Neighbors on the first anniversary of her death, seeking to continue her commitment to helping others. The gift came from royalties generated by a book compiled from the actor’s diaries, whose Korean title translates as “I Plead Against Everything That Kills Me.”

Good Neighbors shared the results of the scholarship project with Kim’s family around the second anniversary of her death.

Jeon Mi-sun, secretary-general of Good Neighbors, said the donation from Kim and her family helped the children grow in healthy and positive ways. She said the organization would work to ensure memorial gifts do more than preserve someone’s memory by turning them into practical assistance for neighbors in need.

Continuing a legacy through giving

Kim’s name was added to the Neighbors Legacy Club, a Good Neighbors group for people honored through estate and memorial donations. The organization assists donors throughout the process, from preparing pledges and wills to reporting how donated funds were used.

Good Neighbors said its estate-giving options include notarized wills, trusts that function as alternatives to wills and designating the organization as a life insurance beneficiary.
