A Double Life Driven by Revenge
Netflix’s South Korean series “My Name” follows a young woman who infiltrates both a powerful criminal organization and the police while searching for her father’s killer.
Han So-hee stars as Yoon Ji-woo, who witnesses her father’s death and vows to take revenge. She joins Dongcheon, described as South Korea’s largest drug ring, and receives help from its guarded leader, Choi Mu-jin, played by Park Hee-soon. Mu-jin trains her and places her inside the police under the name Oh Hye-jin, turning her into an informant for the organization.
The setup puts Ji-woo between two competing worlds. Ahn Bo-hyun plays Jeon Pil-do, her principled partner on the police force, while Kim Sang-ho portrays Cha Gi-ho, a narcotics unit chief nearing retirement who is determined to dismantle Dongcheon. Lee Hak-joo appears as Mu-jin’s fiercely loyal lieutenant, Jung Tae-ju, and Jang Yul plays Do Gang-jae, an expelled gang member seeking revenge against the organization.
Yoon Kyung-ho makes a special appearance as Ji-woo’s father, Yoon Dong-hoon, who was also a close friend of Mu-jin. The supporting cast includes Baek Joo-hee as Kang Su-yeon, Moon Sang-min as Ko Gun-pyeong and Kim Byung-chul as Detective Jo.
An Eight-Part Korean Crime Thriller
Released Oct. 15, 2021, “My Name” consists of eight episodes across one season. The crime drama and mystery series was produced by Studio Santa Claus Entertainment, directed by Kim Jin-min and written by Kim Ba-da.
Kim Jin-min previously directed Korean television dramas including “Time Between Dog and Wolf,” “Pride and Prejudice” and “Marriage Contract,” as well as the Netflix series “Extracurricular.” Kim Ba-da contributed to the screenplays for the films “A Man Who Was Superman,” “The Huntresses” and “Life Risking Romance.”
The production also reunited several cast members from popular 2020 Korean dramas. Han and Lee appeared together in JTBC’s “The World of the Married,” while Ahn and Yoon both appeared in “Itaewon Class.”
From Busan to Netflix
Netflix announced plans to distribute the project in August 2020, when it was known under the working title “Undercover.” Casting was finalized the following month, and filming ran from November 2020 through February 2021.
Three episodes premiered Oct. 7, 2021, at the 26th Busan International Film Festival, one of South Korea’s leading film events. They screened in “On Screen,” a section introduced that year for serialized streaming productions. Netflix subsequently released all eight episodes.
The soundtrack includes Hwang Sang-jun’s “My Name,” featuring Swervy and JEMINN, and “Mediocre Life,” featuring Free Holiday, as well as Park Eun-ji’s “Alone.”
