RIIZE trades choreography for an acoustic sound
K-pop group RIIZE released “Insomnia” on Oct. 26, marking its first move into acoustic pop after building its image around performance-focused songs and synchronized choreography.
The single pulls back on heavy beats to emphasize the six members’ voices and harmonies. Restrained vocals accompany a wistful guitar arrangement, while lyrics by Kim Eana, a prominent Korean lyricist, explore the thoughts and complicated emotions that intensify during a sleepless night. The song describes trying to stop thinking about someone, only for that person to become more vivid.
Strong results across Asian and Latin American charts
SM Entertainment said “Insomnia” reached No. 1 on both the overall and singles categories of QQ Music’s digital album sales chart in China. Sales surpassed 250,000 yuan, earning the release the platform’s gold certification. It also led QQ Music’s sharing popularity chart and topped both the overall and Korean categories of its music video chart.
The single ranked No. 1 on Kugou Music’s digital album sales chart and Tencent Music’s K-pop chart. In Japan, it reached No. 2 on Line Music’s real-time New Song Top 100 and No. 3 on its Song Top 100.
On Apple’s iTunes Top Songs chart, “Insomnia” hit No. 1 in Argentina and Chile. It placed in the top 10 in eight markets, including Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan and Panama.
RIIZE also finished first in an October comeback-themed vote organized by idoki, a global K-pop fandom platform that connects fan voting with promotional rewards for artists.
A cinematic music video and Seoul fan event
The drama-style music video casts each member as the lead in a separate story, moving between nighttime reality and dreamlike scenes. As of Oct. 28, the video on the SMTOWN YouTube channel had 10,286,549 views.
The song also became a trending search term in South Korea. Although the English word “insomnia” ordinarily directs users to medical information about the sleep disorder on Naver, the country’s leading search portal, all eight of the latest news results displayed there on Oct. 28 concerned RIIZE’s release.
To mark the single, the group opened “RIIZE into INSOMNIA,” an exhibition and interactive fan event at Space S50 in Seoul’s Seongsu neighborhood. The event runs through Oct. 29.
