Church takes emergency security measures
Yoido Full Gospel Church said it suspects the names and birth dates of 850,000 members were exposed in a cybersecurity incident. The Seoul church said the data believed to have been compromised contained personal information and that it removed malicious software as an emergency security measure.
The church’s name appeared among rapidly rising Google Trends searches on Oct. 7, 2026.
One of South Korea’s largest churches
Yoido Full Gospel Church is a Protestant megachurch in Seoul’s Yeouido district, a major business and political center. It belongs to the Assemblies of God of Korea, a Pentecostal denomination that is part of the United Christian Churches of Korea.
Pastors Cho Yong-gi and Choi Ja-sil founded the church in 1958, beginning with five worshippers in a tent in what is now Seoul’s Eunpyeong district. The congregation moved to its current building in 1973.
The church became known as the world’s largest single Protestant congregation, reporting 700,000 registered members in 1993 and 1 million in 2020. It later adjusted its organizational structure by making some satellite congregations independent. Lee Young-hoon was serving as senior pastor as of 2020.
The church maintains satellite campuses across Seoul and is affiliated with independent congregations in regions throughout South Korea. Its official website is operated through FGTV, its broadcasting organization.
