South Korea’s Top Google Trending Searches Include Baseball Manager Kim Seong-geun, KOSPI and Entertainment Stories

Kim Seong-geun tops South Korea’s real-time search rankings
Google Korea’s real-time trending search list on Oct. 2 showed strong public interest across television, finance, politics, entertainment and sports. The most-searched term was Kim Seong-geun, a veteran South Korean baseball manager whose name rose alongside searches related to the baseball program “Fire Baseball” and its second season.
Search activity connected to the show included coverage of games involving the Fire Fighters team and a university national team, as well as reports about Kim’s lineup decisions and his response after a recent loss. Related stories also highlighted Kim saying he had “lost energy” after the defeat and his close attention to players during training.
Stock market and political topics draw attention
The Korean stock market index KOSPI was another major trending search term, with an estimated search volume of 5,000-plus. The index closed at 7,003.74 on Oct. 2, recovering the 7,000 level after rising 32.39 points, or 0.46 percent, from the previous session.
Another widely searched political topic involved lawmaker Kim Tae-gyu. Reports related to the search discussed remarks attributed to him regarding former presidents Chun Doo-hwan and Yoon Suk Yeol, followed by an expression of regret. The National Assembly’s Steering Committee also processed a resolution calling for his expulsion, which passed in a secret vote with all 16 lawmakers present voting in favor.
Entertainment, sports and everyday issues shape search trends
Several entertainment-related terms appeared on the list. The search term “father” was linked to reports about singer Jang Yoon-jung’s relationship with her father and coverage involving her family life. Choi Hwan-hee, son of late actress Choi Jin-sil, also became a trending topic as reports marked the 18th anniversary of his mother’s death and covered his visit to her memorial site.
Sports interest focused on the Venezuela national soccer team, which recorded the highest estimated search volume among the listed terms at 10,000-plus. Related reports covered comments from coach Moreno ahead of a match involving Venezuela and South Korea, including remarks describing striker Oh Hyeon-gyu as “the first defender” in the team’s approach.
Other major search terms included Steve Seung-jun Yoo, referring to reports about Yoo Seung-jun’s legal dispute over visa issuance and his victory in a third appeal; “honeymoon,” connected to reports about a once-popular honeymoon destination; and “trash bags,” after reports about 25 million won ($18,000) found inside a garbage bag and the lack of a confirmed owner.
Interest also grows around Korea’s seaweed industry
The search term “gim,” Korea’s traditional dried seaweed product, also appeared on the list. Related searches included discussions about calls from Sinan County for expanded government support for the seaweed industry, as well as reports on challenges facing producers, including rising fuel and electricity costs and the impact of unusual weather conditions.
