A Korean sci-fi thriller with a Japanese director
“Connect,” a six-episode Korean series directed by Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike, debuted on Disney+ on Dec. 7, 2022. Blending science fiction, fantasy, crime and mystery, the drama stars Jung Hae-in, Ko Kyung-pyo and Kim Hye-jun.
Based on a webtoon of the same name, the series marked the first Korean drama directed by a Japanese filmmaker. Nakamura Masaru and Heo Dam wrote the screenplay, and Studio Dragon, Lezhin Studio and Studio HIM participated in the production.
An immortal man and his stolen sight
Jung plays Ha Dong-soo, a member of a newly evolved group of humans known as “Connects,” whose bodies can heal themselves after severe injuries. He conceals his identity and reaches the outside world by posting his music online.
His life unravels after organ traffickers abduct him and remove one of his eyes. After escaping, Dong-soo discovers that he can still see through the stolen eye, which has been transplanted into serial killer Oh Jin-seop, played by Ko. The killer turns his victims’ bodies into macabre works of art, setting Dong-soo on a pursuit to recover his eye and stop him.
Kim plays Choi Yi-rang, an ally who knows the secret of the Connects, while Kim Roi-ha appears as Detective Choi. The supporting cast includes Yang Dong-geun as musician Z and Jang Gwang as a doctor involved with the organ-trafficking ring.
From Busan to Disney+
Studio Dragon announced preparations for the project with Miike in June 2021. Filming was underway by January 2022 and reportedly concluded that March.
The first three episodes premiered Oct. 6, 2022, in the On Screen section of the 27th Busan International Film Festival, one of South Korea’s most prominent film events. Disney+ released all six episodes simultaneously two months later.
Critical response
Rotten Tomatoes recorded a 100% critics score for “Connect” based on six reviews, with an average rating of 7.2 out of 10.
