Drama finale draws attention
Online searches for TVING rose Oct. 7 as the South Korean streaming service prepared to release the final episodes of its original workplace drama “Even Lottery Winners Go to Work.” At the same time, related searches showed continued interest in compensation over a major leak of user information.
The 10-episode series follows Gong Eun-tae, a team leader who keeps his corporate job after winning the lottery, and his colleagues on Sales Team 5. Lee Jun-hyuk stars as Gong. Episodes 9 and 10 were scheduled to premiere on TVING at 6 p.m. Oct. 8, while the series also airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on South Korean cable channel tvN.
Cast member Ha Yul-ri, who plays contract employee Lee Ji-hye, shared a commuting photo Oct. 7 featuring the fictional company’s logo and her employee identification card.
Clips build momentum online
Videos from the series have also attracted substantial audiences on TVING’s official YouTube channel. A clip titled “I Think My Ears Are Going to Ring,” posted Oct. 1, had 1,257,917 views in a seven-day tally as of Oct. 7. Two other clips had 904,362 and 876,680 views, respectively.
Data leak remains in focus
Search terms linked to TVING included phrases for compensation applications, the data leak and participation in a lawsuit. A breach in June affected nearly 40 million TVING users. The company apologized and said it would provide compensation worth 10,000 won to each person affected. TVING’s security management was also criticized during a National Assembly audit, South Korea’s equivalent of congressional oversight hearings.
TVING is a subscription streaming platform offering Korean dramas, movies, variety shows, live television and sports, including the Korean Baseball Organization and Korean Basketball League. Its advertised plans start at 5,500 won a month for an ad-supported subscription, with monthly, annual, standard and premium options also available.
More October programming
TVING is also scheduled to release “Last Stage: 24H,” which will determine the finalists for “Street World Fighter: Director’s War,” at 10 p.m. Oct. 13. In sports programming, a 10-part web variety series about the offseason lives of all 10 KBL teams began Oct. 5. Two episodes are released each Monday on the TVING SPORTS YouTube channel, with Episodes 3 and 4 scheduled for Oct. 12.
