Donation Will Help Expand Museum Collection
RM, the leader of K-pop group BTS, donated 100 million won to help the National Museum of Korea acquire objects for its collection, the museum said Sept. 30.
The donation from RM, whose legal name is Kim Nam-joon, was delivered Sept. 29 through the National Museum of Korea Association, a nonprofit organization that supports the museum. The money will be used when the association purchases artifacts or donates them to the museum.
The association also funds academic work and museum facilities. Its previous acquisitions include a lacquered box with mother-of-pearl lotus scroll designs from Korea’s Joseon dynasty and calligraphy by Hwang Gi-ro, a noted calligrapher from the dynasty’s early period. Both works were donated to the museum.
Using Global Fame to Promote Korean Heritage
RM was appointed the museum’s first global ambassador in June. The museum said his donation and continued support for arts and culture could broaden public interest in Korean cultural heritage and museums.
“As a global ambassador for the National Museum of Korea, I am pleased to be able to support the museum,” RM said. “I will continue to work with the museum to promote it and our culture.”
RM previously donated 100 million won in both 2021 and 2022 to a Korean foundation dedicated to preserving, restoring and promoting Korean cultural heritage located outside the country.
A Global K-pop Star Backs Korean Culture
For BTS fans in the United States and elsewhere, the donation highlights how RM has used the group’s international reach to draw attention not only to Korean popular culture but also to the country’s artistic heritage. His role as the museum’s first global ambassador formally links one of South Korea’s best-known music figures with its flagship national museum.
