A Strong Opening Week
South Korean crime drama “The Assassin(s)” topped both the overall and domestic-film box office charts for the week of Sept. 21-27, according to official data from the Korean Film Council.
The film drew 1,546,589 moviegoers during the week and had reached a cumulative audience of 1,566,194. It generated 15.35 billion won in weekly ticket sales after opening in South Korea on Sept. 23, 2026.
A National Ceremony Turns Into a Crime Scene
Set on Aug. 15, 1974, the film begins during a live broadcast of South Korea’s 29th Liberation Day ceremony, a major national commemoration. As the country watches, the first lady is shot, throwing the event into chaos.
A suspect is quickly arrested, and authorities move to close the case as a national tragedy. But Cheol-gu, a detective assigned to security at the ceremony, becomes suspicious when the official investigation does not match what he witnessed. Jae-hwan, a newspaper city editor, and Young-il, a rookie reporter who saw the turmoil firsthand, share his doubts.
Director and Cast
Hur Jin-ho directed the 130-minute film, whose Korean rating permits viewers ages 12 and older. His previous work includes “A Normal Family,” “The Last Princess,” “The Gift” and “Forbidden Dream.”
The cast includes Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il, Lee Min-ho, Bae Jun-ho and Sota Shingo. Park is known internationally for films including “Decision to Leave” and “Hansan: Rising Dragon.” Bae plays a protocol secretary, while Sota appears as a Japanese police officer.
