A Chance Reunion Turns Ominous
South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong’s mystery drama “Burning” opened in Korean theaters on May 17, 2018, following three young people drawn into an increasingly unsettling relationship.
Jong-su, played by Yoo Ah-in, is working a temporary job for a distribution company when he encounters Hae-mi, portrayed by Jeon Jong-seo, a childhood neighbor. Before leaving for Africa, Hae-mi asks Jong-su to care for her cat. When she returns, she introduces him to Ben, an enigmatic man played by Steven Yeun.
Ben later accompanies Hae-mi to Jong-su’s home and reveals a secretive hobby. The disclosure leaves Jong-su with a growing sense that something is wrong.
From Murakami to Cannes
Lee and Oh Jung-mi wrote the screenplay, drawing only the central motif from Haruki Murakami’s short story “Barn Burning” while creating new characters and a different plot.
“Burning” was selected for the competition lineup at the 71st Cannes Film Festival and premiered at the festival’s Grand Théâtre Lumière on May 16, 2018. In South Korea, it recorded 521,670 admissions through June 10, according to the country’s integrated box-office tracking system.
Filming ran from Sept. 11, 2017, through Jan. 30, 2018. The supporting cast included Moon Sung-keun as a lawyer and Lee Soo-jung as a prosecutor, along with Kim Soo-kyung, Lee Go-woon and Bae Min-jung.
Pinehouse Film and Nowfilm produced the movie, with CGV Arthouse handling distribution. The film runs 147 minutes and received a South Korean adults-only rating.
