Samsung union shifts focus to semiconductor division
A labor union representing Samsung Electronics workers has reorganized itself around the company’s semiconductor business, moving away from a broader structure that previously included employees from multiple business areas.
The Samsung Electronics chapter of the Samsung Group Super Enterprise Labor Union announced on Sept. 19 that it had approved a revised union charter recognizing only workers from the Device Solutions (DS) division as members. The DS division oversees Samsung’s semiconductor operations.
The vote was approved by 27,618 members, or 96.3% of those who cast ballots. A total of 28,680 out of 51,350 eligible voters participated in the four-day vote held from Sept. 16 to Sept. 19.
Consumer electronics workers to leave union structure
The change transforms the union from an organization covering both Samsung’s semiconductor business and its Device eXperience (DX) division, which includes finished products such as home appliances and smartphones, into a semiconductor-focused labor group.
Under the revised rules, existing DX division members are expected to be removed from the union membership list.
Two DX leaders removed amid internal dispute
The same general meeting also approved no-confidence motions against two DX division officials: Vice Chairman Lee Song-i and Gwangju branch head Lee Won-il.
The motions received overwhelming support, with 27,441 votes in favor of Lee Song-i’s removal and 27,588 votes supporting Lee Won-il’s removal.
The dispute was linked to controversy over contracts involving a company operated by the father-in-law of union chairman Choi Seung-ho. The union said it believed the two DX officials had disclosed the issue externally and opposed efforts to reorganize the group around the DS division.
Separate semiconductor-focused bargaining planned
The restructuring follows disagreements over Samsung’s wage and labor negotiations, particularly over how performance bonuses should be distributed across the company.
The union has argued that semiconductor workers should receive performance-based compensation tied to operating profits, similar to the approach used by some competing semiconductor companies. It has said it plans to pursue separate bargaining for the DS division rather than joint negotiations beginning next year.
