What is Fusidin ointment?
Fusidin ointment, a topical antibiotic widely known in South Korea, contains sodium fusidate as its active ingredient. The medicine is manufactured by Dongwha Pharm Co., Ltd. and is used for certain bacterial skin infections caused by organisms including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Corynebacterium and Clostridium species.
According to information from South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the ointment may be used for conditions including impetigo, infected eczema-like dermatitis, common acne, folliculitis, boils, hidradenitis suppurativa and secondary infections caused by burns, injuries, surgical wounds and skin graft sites.
How to use the ointment
Users should clean the affected area before applying the ointment. It can be applied directly to the skin in an appropriate amount once or twice a day, or spread onto sterile gauze and placed over the affected area.
South Korean medication guidance recommends limiting use to about one week and avoiding applying a thick layer of the product.
Safety precautions and possible side effects
The ointment should not be used by people with hypersensitivity to the medicine or by patients with infections caused by bacteria that are not susceptible to the treatment, such as Pseudomonas species.
Pregnant women, people who may be pregnant, breastfeeding women, premature infants and newborns are advised to consult a doctor or pharmacist before use. The medication has high skin absorption properties, so long-term use is not recommended. It should not be used as an eye medication or applied to areas such as the eyes or inner eyelids.
Possible reactions include itching, redness, swelling, small bumps, blisters and temporary burning sensations. Other hypersensitivity reactions, including rashes, mild pain and irritation, may also occur. Patients with severe leg ulcers who experience pain after application are advised to stop using the ointment and seek medical advice.
Storage and common questions
Fusidin ointment should be stored at room temperature and kept out of reach of children.
South Korean medication guidance lists common acne as one of the conditions where the ointment may be used. However, applying more or using it longer does not mean it will work faster. Because of its absorption characteristics, extended use should be avoided.
The ointment should not be applied around the eyes. The product is not intended for ophthalmic use or for areas inside the face such as the eyes and eyelids.
