Six Films Chosen by An Sung-ki Screen in Busan

The Busan International Film Festival has completed a special program honoring An Sung-ki, the celebrated Korean actor who died in January.

Titled “Beautiful Days, An Sung-ki,” the retrospective featured six films from the 1980s and 1990s that An had personally recommended while organizers were planning the program several years ago. The lineup included Lee Jang-ho’s “A Fine, Windy Day” (1980), Bae Chang-ho’s “Whale Hunting” (1984), Park Kwang-su’s “Chilsu and Mansu” (1988), Lee Myung-se’s “Gagman” (1988), Chung Ji-young’s “White Badge” (1992) and Im Kwon-taek’s “Festival” (1996).

Cinephiles and younger moviegoers attended the screenings, which reportedly drew audiences filling more than 90% of available seats.

Filmmakers and Actors Share Memories

Post-screening conversations featured directors Lee Jang-ho, Bae Chang-ho, Park Kwang-su, Lee Myung-se and Chung Ji-young, who discussed their films and recalled working with An. A separate talk accompanying “Festival” brought together critic Jung Sung-il and actors Kim Bo-yeon, Kim Soo-chul and Bae Jong-ok.

Jung remembered An as unfailingly courteous and kind. He said the actor treated everyone with respect and listened closely during interviews, working to offer thoughtful answers even when questions were awkward or unexpected.

Festival programmer Jung Ji-hye said the directors who helped shape a golden era of Korean cinema alongside An gave audiences a meaningful opportunity to remember him and the films they made together.

Commemorative Book and Exhibition

The festival also published “Between Adventure and Example: An Sung-ki, an Actor of His Times,” a commemorative volume featuring Jung’s assessment of An’s career, critical essays about his performances and interviews with fellow actors.

An exhibition titled “Cinema and Contemporary Art: Remembering An Sung-ki” is running at Museum 1 in Busan’s Haeundae district through Dec. 27. The 31st Busan International Film Festival opened Oct. 6 and is scheduled to conclude Oct. 15 after a 10-day run.
