South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will host the 2026 APEC Smart Mobility Forum from the 14th through the 16th at the Westin Josun Seoul hotel.
Government representatives from 10 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation member economies will join transportation experts and industry officials to discuss cooperation on artificial intelligence, autonomous driving and next-generation transportation systems.
Turning Regional Principles Into Policy
The forum builds on smart mobility recommendations developed under South Korea’s leadership last year. Those recommendations set out 10 areas for cooperation, including integration, connectivity, innovation, prosperity and a focus on people.
Participants will share policy experiences, operating models and technology trends from their economies. Sessions on the 15th will cover international standards and data governance; autonomous-vehicle trials and transportation operations; and technologies including AI, self-driving systems and digital infrastructure.
Safety and Responsibility
Discussions on the 14th will examine safety and accountability in an era of fully autonomous vehicles. Hwang Kee-yeon, a visiting professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, known as KAIST, will address the need to revise regulatory and operating systems as autonomous driving expands.
Mike Brown, chair of the International Organization for Standardization’s technical committee on intelligent transportation systems, will discuss “cognitive mobility,” an approach that connects AI, intelligent infrastructure, vehicles and international standards.
Government delegates will also review progress on implementing last year’s recommendations and consider further cooperation through APEC. A separate dialogue involving young people and mobility companies will focus on workforce needs and the role of businesses in the future transportation industry.
Business Meetings and Technology Tours
South Korean mobility companies will meet transportation officials from participating APEC economies on the afternoon of the 14th to present their technologies and explore opportunities for international cooperation.
On the final day, participants will visit the Korea Expressway Corp.’s traffic information center and the Samsung Innovation Museum to examine South Korea’s traffic-management systems and examples of advanced technology in use.
Transport Minister Hong Ji-seon said closer coordination among policy, operations and technology is increasingly important as AI and autonomous-driving systems develop rapidly. South Korea, Hong said, intends to continue sharing its experience and pursuing practical smart mobility cooperation with other APEC economies.
