Officials reaffirm US-South Korea economic ties
South Korean Deputy Prime Minister and finance chief Lee Hyung-il held his first talks with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent by video conference from the government complex in Seoul on the 13th.
The officials reaffirmed the importance of economic and financial cooperation between the longtime allies and discussed shared economic policy priorities and ways to strengthen bilateral coordination.
Bessent congratulated Lee on taking office, while Lee thanked him and expressed hope that the two countries’ finance ministers would maintain close communication. Bessent also disclosed the meeting in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Global finance meetings in Bangkok
Lee was scheduled to travel to Bangkok the following day to attend annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, along with gatherings of finance ministers from the Group of 20 and Group of Seven nations. The meetings opened on the 12th local time.
U.S. and South Korean finance chiefs have often held bilateral talks on the sidelines of such international gatherings. This meeting took place virtually amid expectations that Bessent would not travel to Bangkok.
South Korea’s finance ministry said it would continue communicating with the United States and other major economies to expand international economic and financial cooperation.
