‘Chiikawa’ Remains the Weekly Leader

“Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island” held on to the top spot at South Korea’s box office for the week of Oct. 26 to Nov. 1, according to the Korean Film Council, the government-supported agency that tracks the country’s film industry.

The animated feature drew 335,811 moviegoers during the week, bringing its total attendance to 2,583,854 since its Sept. 30 release. It earned 3.42 billion won for the period, accounting for 29.8% of weekly box-office revenue. The film played 20,917 times across 1,167 screens.

“Heart of Beast” surged 52 places to No. 2 after opening Oct. 28. It attracted 216,061 viewers during the week and earned 2.12 billion won, an 18.4% share of the market. Advance screenings had appeared in the previous week’s data, so KOFIC did not classify the movie as a new entry.

“Assassin(s)” slipped one place to No. 3, adding 73,622 admissions. The film has sold 3,447,955 tickets since opening Sept. 23.

Advance Screenings Shape the Rankings

“The CSAT: Secrets of Making the Exam” climbed 25 spots to No. 4, drawing 69,613 viewers during the week. Its title refers to South Korea’s high-stakes College Scholastic Ability Test, commonly known as the Suneung, which plays a central role in university admissions. Like “Heart of Beast,” the film was not listed as a new release because advance screenings had already been counted.

“Tazza: Song of Beelzebub” fell one place to No. 5 with 56,060 weekly admissions and 2,055,475 overall. “Attack on Titan: Crimson Bow and Arrow,” originally released in South Korea in January 2015, made the chart’s sharpest move, jumping 127 places to No. 6 with 47,738 viewers.

“Paradise Lost” ranked seventh with 46,558 admissions, followed by “Clayface” at No. 8 with 38,166. Both films declined from the previous week.

‘Odyssey’ Passes 12.3 Million Admissions

“Odyssey” slipped three places to No. 9 but remained the chart’s biggest cumulative draw. The film added 24,144 admissions, lifting its total to 12,335,266 since its Aug. 5 release.

“Still Brilliant” completed the top 10 with 20,478 weekly viewers and 61,515 overall. All rankings, attendance figures, revenue totals and screening data cover the Oct. 26-Nov. 1 period and were compiled from KOFIC’s weekly box-office report.
