Democrats Gain Early Edge in House Results

Democrats held an early advantage as votes were counted in the U.S. midterm elections on the evening of the 3rd, raising the possibility that the party could reclaim control of the House after four years.

As of 8:30 p.m. Eastern time, Decision Desk HQ had called 90 of the House’s 435 seats for Democrats and 66 for Republicans. The election forecasting service put the probability of a Democratic House victory at 100%.

The outlook for the Senate remained less certain. Decision Desk HQ gave Democrats a 72% chance of winning 51 seats, compared with a 28% chance of a Republican victory.

Key Senate Races Remain Unsettled

No winners had been declared in seven closely watched states expected to determine control of the Senate.

In Ohio, Democratic candidate Sherrod Brown led Republican Jon Husted 56.8% to 39.72% with 35% of votes counted. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico had 56.87% to Republican Ken Paxton’s 41.55% with 30% counted.

Democratic candidates also held early leads in Kansas, Michigan and Maine, though less than 30% of the vote had been reported in those states. Counting had not begun in Iowa or Alaska.

In South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews led Republican Darlene Graham 52.52% to 45.95% with 46% counted, despite preelection polling that had shown a narrow Republican advantage.

Early Vote Patterns Complicate the Picture

The initial results included mail and early ballots, which were expected to favor Democratic voters. That made it too soon to draw firm conclusions about which party would ultimately control the Senate as more Election Day votes were added.

NBC projected Senate victories for Democrats Mark Warner, Jon Ossoff, Ed Markey, Jack Reed, Cory Booker, Juliana Stratton, Chris Coons, Chris Pappas and Roy Cooper. It projected Republican wins for Ashley Moody and Shelley Moore Capito.

In governors’ races, NBC projected Democratic victories for Josh Shapiro, Maura Healey, Wes Moore, JB Pritzker and Helena Folkis.
