Korean High Jump Star's Medal Challenge
South Korea's premier athletics star Woo Sang-hyuk (30) will compete for a medal in the men's high jump at the World Athletics Championships opening September 13 in Tokyo, Japan. Having finished disappointingly in 4th place at last year's Paris Olympics, Woo is determined to achieve redemption and is currently in final preparations.

Overcoming Early Season Struggles
After struggling with poor conditioning early this year, Woo has shown dramatic improvement since last month. He has consecutively cleared over 2.33 meters during the European tour in August, restoring his confidence. His coaching staff evaluates that "Woo's records and form are more stable than during the Olympics."
Woo stated, "This year has been really difficult, but I believe I've become stronger through that process. I will definitely return from Tokyo with a medal around my neck," demonstrating his strong determination.
Competition Against World-Class Rivals
The championship will feature world-class athletes including Paris Olympic gold medalist Hamza Kachlam (Qatar) and silver medalist Shelby McEwan (USA). Kachlam particularly shows overwhelming dominance, having set a world-leading 2.39 meters this year.
However, Woo also holds competitive strength as the holder of a 2.37-meter personal best. Experts analyze that "Woo's stable technique and big-stage experience could be variables in the competition."
Team Korea's Medal Expectations
Beyond Woo Sang-hyuk, the Korean athletics team expects good results in various events. Women's marathon runners Seo Jung-ju and Lee So-young, and men's hammer thrower Kim Tae-hyung have each announced challenges for medal contention.
This championship, being the first major international competition since the 2024 Paris Olympics, is expected to be an important opportunity for Korean athletics to reconfirm its competitiveness on the world stage.
